The University of West Florida softball team split with No. 19 Valdosta State in Saturday’s action. The Argonauts took game one 6-2 but fell in game two 10-6. West Florida is now 11-11 on the season and 2-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
West Florida saw both pitching and hitting flourish in the first game against the ranked Blazers. The Argos totaled 10 hits in the ball game and six of them came from senior Caroline Kaston
(Niceville, Fla.) and freshman Jessica Wilkinson
(Gainesville, Fla.) who each went 3-for-3. Wilkinson added two RBI in the game including a solo home run in bottom of the fifth inning. Two Argos homered in the game; the other was catcher Jenna Belser
(Chipley, Fla.) who blasted a two run shot in the fourth inning. Senior Taylor Bailey
(Austin, Texas) was dominant on the mound, holding the 19th ranked Blazers to just two runs on six hits and also had seven strikeouts.
The second game was a different story for UWF, this time No. 19 Valdosta State found their hitting stroke and totaled 10 runs on eight hits. The Argos scored six runs on ten hits in the ball game including two different Argos recording multiple hits in the game. Senior Audrey Harner
(Celina, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored while senior Danielle Sanders
went 1-for-2 that included a solo home run in the third inning.
